It displays availability and price range for a selection of hotels ranked by distance from a reference point. The rates available are standard hotel rates from Sabre (which owns travelocity), and seem to match pretty well with the hotel web sites (not surprising since some of them probably use Sabre too). Travelweb was already mentioned. I don't care as much for Travelweb because the operation is tedious compared to travelocity. With travelweb you have to check pricing and availability individually with every hotel, and the hotels come up in either random or alphabetical order. The Hotel Choice chains (Comfort Inn, Quality Inn, Econolodge, etc.) seem to be the worst offenders here, frequently listing "cities served" which are 60 miles or more from the hotel. Travelscape was mentioned - this is a consolidator. They may have the best prices, but do not use them as an indication of availability. As for travelscapes low price guarantee, it just isn't so. Random check for 10/21/00 in Orlando showed travelscape's rate for Holiday Inn Family Suites at $109 and for Sheraton Safari at $145. HIFS is $89 at several other consolidators (e.g. valuetrips.com, www.valuetrips.com/FL/ORL...nnFSR.htm) and Safari was $125 at the Sheraton website!

They are sort of like a consolidator with hotels on several major cities. Unlike travelscape, though, quikbook reservations are not prepaid, which is good to know for when you make a backup reservation that later need to cancel. Travelscape reservations are "purchased" when you book them and you pay for them right then. They can be cancelled up to 72 hours in advance of the stay but can only be done via phone and it can be a pain to get a hold of someone. At least that was my experience about a year ago when I used travelscape.com to book a backup reservation at the Chicago Renaissance hotel. When I later cancelled it because of a priceline bid, it took two months to get a credit to my AmEx card of their prepaid charges.

They do not usually have a large inventory, but frequently have good deals for - you guessed it - last minute bookings. Example: checking for Boston next week (7/11 check-in), very little availability through conventional channels and very high prices where there was availability. lastminutetravel.com, however, is offering the Swissotel at $139 a night. Cheapest rate through standard booking was $300 a night.

They offer some special contract rates with some hotels, but list all kinds of availability and rates, kind of like Travelocity. If you click on their "special" rates, don't give up. When you ask for "all" hotels, special rates will show up in a lot of hotels. I got a $95 rate at the ever-so-trendy Phoenix Hotel when the lowest I found anywhere else was about 119. When I checked out of the hotel, people trying to get walkin rooms (unsuccessfully) were quoted a rate of $135. I THINK I prepaid. Anyhow, it's another rate-check option.

(All Canadian Pacific hotels have been rebranded as Fairmonts, although all except the Lombard have kept their individual names as well.) This means that deltahotels.com is the only Canada-specific site remaining (and it has an Orlando property as well as the many north of the 49th).

Can book from the page. Bad - Pictures can cause pages to download slowly(for phone line modem users) for big cities. You may want to use broadband only OR turn off pictures in your browser options. Also, using the "A-Z" link on a city's page may be helpful.

For example, it was $25/night cheaper than any other site I've checked for a Doubletree rate in Del Mar (north of San Diego). www.savecash.com It links to a hotel res site after you select one of the 3 cities.

Since hotels are currently vacant, many are running promotions with the city's convention and tourism bureau. These promotions are usually cheaper than what is offered on the hotel's own website. Other than great price, these promotions often offer complimentary parking, continental breakfast, etc. Every large and mid-sized city has a website with these promotions on it so you could just do a search for the city's tourism bureau. I am currently researching prices on hotels in Portland in preparation for bidding. The prices on the site were indeed lower than some at the hotel sites (e.g. Westin $139 ; at hotel site, $204 (not AAA or government)). I have found it to be a convenient and reliable source for rates of hotels in the Portland.

As the URL suggests it is designed to give you late prices ie for rooms to be booked within a month. However, we've used it as a really valuable tool for finding where hotels are... typically it lists 30 or 40 options for an area (obviously more or less depending on the number of hotels) and gives you prices - the discounted ones are highlighted. For frequent travellers, it offers you the chance to get away from the chain hotels. Sure you may take pot luck on facilities but if you want to stay in an English country mansion - this is the site for you!

They are www.sidestep.com and www.farechase.com. I have done comparison searches, and they really do seem to find the lowest rates (air fare too). It saves a lot of time.

The web site is nice, too, with very detailed descriptions of the hotels and pictures. If you book with them there's no pre-pay, and the cancelation policy is just whatever the policy is of your specified hotel.
