Posts: 823 (10/25/09 5:41 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	In the past, NYE night caused a blip in prices, and sometimes made it difficult to acquire a room at a good rate, if your stay included it. However, given the current economy, and California's 12.2% unemployment rate, this may not be so true this year. We generally spend every New Year's in SF, and bid around early-to-mid November. Last year we secured the USW Hilton for $80/night. You could start bidding now, but my gut tells me you would do better waiting a week or two. If you do not choose to wait, then I would start w/$75/night, and using my free re-bids, work my way up to $90. But, if bidding in November, I wouldn't bid over $90/night. In the meantime, make a safety rez and keep on re-bidding, as the Marriott Marquis' rack rate is only $129/night, and if you're willing to bid up to $110/night w/PL, once you add PL's fees in, there really isn't much difference between the two rates. I will post on my result.. I know it is little bit not fitting in this board, I wonder where is the great place in SF for spending last night of this year. Is there any places people coming and able to see firework displays?

Posts: 826 (10/27/09 10:12 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	Try these websites for NYE in SF: http://sanfrancisco.about.com/od/decemberevents/a/sfnewyearsevesp.htm and http://www.sfstation.com/nye/ The first one has lots of information re: events where you can view the fireworks. My husband and I did the kayak one a couple of years back and loved it, but be warned it does get chilly out in the bay. Of course, you can always watch fireworks from inside the Hyatt Embarcadero, but unless you're registered there, I doubt that they will let you in much after 9-10 pm. (Registered guests are given have wristbands). But right outside the Hyatt, (at the Ferry Building) you can see the fireworks just as well, just not as warm. My one caveat to watching them outside with the thousands of others, is that many have been drinking, and when the fireworks are over everyone leaves en masse, which can be a little overwhelming. Best to be on the perimeter of the crowd, and then let it empty out, and follow about 10 minutes later. Never has been an incident, but if there ever was, it wouldn't be pretty. Public transporation runs until the wee hours of the morning, so don't worry 'bout driving anywhere. If you're looking for something romantic, but a little chilly/windy, you can also watch the fireworks from afar from the GG Bridge. It really comes down to what you wanna' do; sometimes your age influences that. But be assuured, whatever your tastes in entertainment, SF will have multiple options. Good luck.

Once you post the info, as the FAQ reads, then you should bid right away. The rates you post for those dates are very very reasonable. There is no reason at all to wait. Chinois is giving you two ways to look at it. He tells you to bid, then he tells you not to. Just go ahead and bid. If the hotels are going to have rooms available to PL, they will have it now. If you wait and others bid and take the inventory, you will be left with less and maybe even higher rates. The point is, just bid and find out. You have already done the research. If you wait, you will need to research it again. The posted rates are low now. They can only go up. They will not go down.

But after bidding for SF NYE hotel rooms for five years in a row, I have found bids that I made in November (and even sometimes early December) were accepted, even tho $15-20 less than the identical night bids I made in October. I wasn't telling anyone not to bid, only sharing my experience, as well as suggesting a bidding strategy if one did decide to bid right away. I assume everyone on this board is intelligent enough to make up their own minds and do what is best for them.

Posts: 198 (10/29/09 2:21 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	LanEvo, Even though this board is not a big fan of Hotwire, it can be used as a tool to find a starting point of where to begin bidding. Currently Hotwire is showing rates in USW in the mid $90s and USE in the mid $100s. It is also showing rates in Embarcadero in the mid $90s, which looks to be the Hilton Financial District. I usually knock $20 of the Hotwire rates and begin my Priceline bidding there, meaning I would start bidding at $70 or so and move up a few dollars per free rebid. Good luck.

I have a question about another thing, debit card which making a trouble in priceline. Event though I tried two debit cards, all of them unidentified in priceline's system. I can't understand why this happend. They are approved in other website such as expedia. Already called my debit card publishers, however they don't know why this occured. My day limit is okay and they can be used in other countrys' site as i used before in expedia. I used debit card with visa...TT..

Do you think I can get the best rate by waiting until mid-November to early December to bid? What about waiting until the last minute, right after New Years? There doesn't seem to be much going in the city on those days.

If you are driving to San Francisco and plan to park at the hotel be sure to factor in parking. Downtown/Union Square/Financial District parking rates per day are now in the $50+ range. Fishermen's Wharf around the $40 range. A number of properties offer parking packages in which the parking is included and nearly always these are better deals than paying for parking separately, which of course, you would have to if you scored on Priceline. So keep those amounts in mind, check for package rates you can book directly and then bid accordingly. The great PL deal could turn out to be less of a deal when you add $50 per night to it to pay for parking. Some examples taken from Apollo (I'm a travel agent) for your stay 30 Dec - 2 Jan. Rates are per night and do not include tax: Courtyard Downtown SF: $99 room only / $129 with valet parking (parking separately is about $49) JW Marriott $219 (first two nights), $199 third night - rates include parking Hilton (333 O'Farrell) - AAA rate with parking $143

All of my credit card make a trouble in priceline so i ask my card publisher to make a another card for me. I think i can update my bidding result in following week. I see from your first check way back, that you actually didn't check the actual hotel websites and posted incorrect info. You used Hotels.com rates. What are the actual hotel website rates? You took a short cut. If they are higher, then you're bidding rates are likely too low and you're wasting your time.

Hotwire is also offering a 4* in the Embarcadero area for $96/nite, which appears to be the Hilton Financial District.
