I fly from LA to SF twice a month, and usually Southwest never steers me wrong. But this Monday I realized I needed to be in SF on Friday, and when I went to Southwest, the cheapest flight was $350! Pretty standard for week of I guess, but man, that's alot.
So based on the previous thread in this section about a successful bid (in 2007) for $70 LAX --> SFO my initial bid for the 1 night stay (returning on Saturday) was $100.
Initial bid of $100 rejected; prompted with automatic "we'll give this to you for $180, taxes included."
I didnt take the automatic price, but instead waited till tonight, Tuesday, and went back and bid $140, which brought the taxes and fees up to $180 (and then I got the $16 insurance -- what if they had given me a 3hour layover in Vegas???)
Successful bid: $140 --> final price $190
Admittedly, this is expensive/normal for a LAX - SFO flight, but considering that it was week of and official airline rates were:
Southwest: $355.40
AA: $355.40
I feel great that I saved $160 and can still get miles, since AA is one of my credit cards.
