I am headed to Michigan in January so thought I'd look at a car rental early since I figured Detroit in January should not be difficult. I bid for a mid-size over several days starting at $14 for mid-size and raised my bid a dollar each day (I also bid same amount-- or same amount plus $1-- for standard and full size each time since those bids were essentially freebies although I figured I was unlikely to win a larger size car for same price I had bid for the mid-size and besides I preferred the midsize for better mpg). Each time I bid I received a counteroffer at $20 per day. Hotwire was at $21 (actually $20.95 ) per day so I figured I would eventually hit on Priceline somewhat under the Priceline's counteroffer price of $20. On fourth try, I hit at $17 a day with Alamo--total for two days with fees and taxes is $50.43. Used the Priceline link (also the Hotwire link but did not book with Hotwire.) I'm pleased with win although my experience with Alamo has not always been great (consistent with slogan: "Oh no---not Alamo" ). Certainly far better than the $60. plus per day on rental companies sites.
