I was very worried when I got this hotel through PL. The rooms looked small and old on their website, and the location wasn't central. We were actually quite satisfied with our stay there.
Upon arrival, the hotel staff only mentioned that our hotel had been prepaid, and we were given a room on the 11th floor. I asked whether we could get a higher floor room, and was told that 11th floor is the highest available for pre-paid rates. Hotel staff were nice, not super friendly but not cold or rude.
When we got to our room, it was HUGE. I¡¦d say it was at least 500 sq ft. The berber carpet was brand new, which we later on found out that it was just replaced a month before. We had a huge ¡§wall¡¨ of window, which was facing ¡§Olohana Street¡¨ with a high-rise condo in construction, but if we leaned out of the balcony, we could see the ocean towards the right and the Ala Wai canal towards the left. So it could probably be classified as partial ocean/canal view º The room/bathroom was clean. Not much furniture, hence lots of open space. We had a lot of wedding stuff to prepare for so the open space was nice for us to spread things out. We actually had to ask for 2 chairs to be brought up into the room, but hotel staff were quick in response to requests. The closet was small, but had a safe inside. A second sink was located right by the entry way, with the fridge underneath. We figured that the room was probably a handicap room because there were railings inside the bathroom. I really liked the huge floor window. In the morning when we slid the whole wall of curtains open, we had a great and bright view.
Although the hotel is not located at the central Waikiki or close to the beach, the walk wasn¡¦t too bad. We didn¡¦t have time to visit beaches and stuff since we were there preparing for our wedding. We had a car but we didn¡¦t use the hotel parking until the last day. Valet parking $9/day, internet connection $7/day. Olohana street was actually quiet compared to a few streets down past Lewers. It seemed to be more of a residential area. We were able to find street parking most of the nights. The farthest parking we had was probably a 5 minute walk.
The big hotel pool though was under maintenance, and only the tiny one was open. That didn¡¦t bother us but make sure to call ahead if you¡¦re looking to spend lots of time in the pool.
The only problem we had was on the last two days of our stay, there was water leaking through the carpet by the closet/outside sink/entry way. Hotel maintenance guy came right up to check for leaks, and later on figured it was probably coming from a leaky pipe that ran from the laundry room next door. The laundry room wasn¡¦t running though so we¡¦re not sure exactly what was going on. They offered to switch us to the 12th floor, since we only had one more night in the hotel we didn¡¦t want to move all the stuff.
I got to check out my friend¡¦s room at the Beachcomber (booked through airline package), they were assigned a smoking room with a ¡§partial escalator view¡¨ (we had no idea where that escalator led to). Our room at the Royal Garden was much better than their room. We also checked out another friend¡¦s room at the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel (got through Expedia), they got upgraded to a Premier Ocean View room but the room was only half the size of our Royal Garden room. Overall we had an enjoyable stay at Royal Garden for our pre-wedding nights.
